How do I ... ?

First of all, if you suspect that your oil burner has malfunctioned and may have resulted in a fire,

Get out of the house First and call the Fire Department.  We do not recommend staying in a smoke filled house.

After the Fire Department gets everything under control they will have you contact your Service Representative.

The shut off switch is located on a RED wall switch marked " Emergency Shut Off "

What do I do if my oil burner fails to operate?"

1.  Be sure that the oil burner switch is on.

2.  Thermostat should be set above room temperature.

3.  Make sure that there is oil in the tank.

4.  Press reset button on relay " JUST ONCE ONLY.

5.  Check to see if flame comes on.

6.  If burner does not run at all, check for blown or loose fuse.

7.  If burner still fails to operate, then call for service (914) 277-8088

Most oil burners should be cleaned and serviced annually.  Some may operate longer but the efficiency level may drop.  Some older units may require more frequent service due to sludge problems that clog nozzles and filters.
The best time to have your oil burner serviced is in between the heating seasons, when the unit is not being used as often.
Sludge is a term used to describe the black, mud-like sediment that can build up in an oil tank.  It can be a combination of bacteria, water, rust and broken down oil.  The age of a tank is not always a factor in the amount of sludge build-up.
